Thump-thump...thump-thump...thump-thump...goes the sound of my heartbeat. It pounds deep within my chest keeping tempo with the clock on the wall. I look down only to watch the rise and fall of my chest reminiscent of tiny ripples of water off the lake on a calm evening. But things are about to change.
Suddenly, a whirlwind o butterflies takes over sucking them into the vortex, now turning their attention to my stomach. As they flutter their way up my torso, up my neck and finally land on my face, naturally allowing the edges of my pouty lips to slowly curl into a warm smile.
A warmth continues to serge throughout my entire body causing my arms to reach out as they search for the tender embrace they've been longing for. The pupils in my deep green eyes can't help but widen to the beautiful sight that is slowly coming into view. It exposes the yellow fleck led specks surrounding the center looking like a million stars brightly shining in the midnight sky.
A distinctive masculine scent fills the air around me captivating all my senses. It intoxicates me like a drug making me desire more. My fingertips can't resist but slowly make their way through the dark and silky strands of hair. It's so touch ably soft as if sending a silent invitation to run my hands through it.
My body starts to tremble in delight causing my weight to shift forward as my knees weaken and slowly start to buckle. I feel your hands gently pulling the small of my back closer for support. Our bodies press against each other so perfectly intertwined designed to fit together forever. And forever with you in the only place I want to be....thump-thump...thump-thump...thump-thump...

Nothing is more powerful than the written word. It moves us in ways nothing else could, and on Valentine's Day, you might even say it's an arrow from cupid right to your heart. The right card is a representation of ourselves and possibly (for those who won't have the opportunity to spend the big 'love' day with their sweeties), represents us when we're not there to represent ourselves.
Special occasions garner special cards (and this is definitely no exception) each donning loving words that play on our deepest emotions making us feel warm and fuzzy all over. Prompting reactions like 'Awwwwww', 'that's so sweet of you', and the piece de resistance, 'I love you'. The perfect card (e-cards too!) speak volumes with the words leaping off the page that pull on the recipients heartstrings. If it makes him or her tear up, you've hit the jackpot. Oh I can hear the sweet sounds of harps already!

"IN MEMORIUM: MOM, A ROSE LIKE NO OTHER"
Tiny droplets of water fill my lower lid. The view before me has become blurry and distorted as darkened silhouettes fill the room making it appear unfamiliar to me, but it shouldn't. This is my home. A place where I spent my childhood and now all the joy and happiness it gave me all those years had disappeared in an instant.
Finally, as if teetering on the edge of a steep cliff a tear breaks free making its way down my face leaving a narrow stream of glistening water in its path leading directly to my lips. The saltiness absorbed by my taste buds as my tongue wipes the traces of it away never to be seen again. Another tear barrels down my face taking another path unlike the previous one. It lands on my favourite black turtleneck erasing all evidence of what bears in the heart. The sorrow, shock and anger has consumed every inch of me that I sit in disbelief at this sudden turn of life changing events.
In December 2009, I suffered an enormous loss. My dear mother, Rose, whom was my rock, my best friend and my partner in crime, passed away suddenly and I have been grieving ever since. Scenes like the one above are none too familiar to me since crying had become a pastime. I couldn't go through a day without shedding a tear the last year. The fear of being alone in a big empty house scared the life out of me. We'd lost my dad in March of 2005 to cancer and now this. I was still grieving his loss and now hers? I felt a constant numbness, confusion and above all abandonment. How could she do this to me? How could they do this to me?
Grief is a very complex thing and it affects people in different ways. It has a way of consuming you if you're not careful. Many a time it brought me to a dark place especially in the first few months after her death. Luckily, I had a great support system with family, friends and my significant other whom I am so blessed to have in my life that lifted my spirits and made me feel whole again.
Now, a year later and I've slowly been picking up the pieces. I've had time to process everything and adjust to this new life without my mom (and dad). I miss her (them) dearly and think fondly about the memories that we made together. I haven't written a word in a year until now. I felt I couldn't express how I was feeling because as a writer it would make me vulnerable to my readers. Imagine that? In my heart, I know it is time to move on and continue on my own journey and make my own path in life a special one. As mom once said, "it's your time to shine." And shine I will. "MAPLE N' PUMPKIN N' SPICE....OH MY!"
With Thanksgiving right around the corner I found a recipe that not only incorporates the true spirit of the Canadian holiday but won't have you spending more time in the kitchen and less time enjoying the fruits of your labour. After all this is a time for family, friends and that special someone. So with all the people that you love all under one roof it's only natural you'd pick something special that everyone will like and is appropriate for this occasion. While all are assembled at the dinner table (after Tom Turkey has made an appearance that is) this sweet little gem makes its debut to the oh's and ah's of Aunt Martha and Little Timmy.
Yup, it's the perfect dessert to end a beautiful meal. It's called 'Maple Pumpkin' and is so easy your guests will think you've been slaving over a hot stove for days (little do they know). This delicious treat is easy to put together. Yet, makes a wonderful statement that will have them craving seconds. Autumn is such a magical time of year and what better way to show it than to bring out the tasty offerings nature gives us year after year. Mother Nature's got it goin' on and now you do too! Dig in everybody!
"MAPLE PUMPKIN"
Ingredients:
8 egg yolks
2 cups (500ml) whipping cream
1/2 cup (250ml) pumpkin puree
1/2 cup (125ml) maple syrup
1/4 cup (50ml) granulated sugar
1 tsp (5ml) vanilla
1/2 tsp (2ml) grated nutmeg
1/4 tsp (1ml) cinnamon
Topping:
1/2 cup (125ml) granulated sugar
Directions:
Whisk egg yolks, cream, pumpkin puree, maple syrup, sugar, vanilla, nutmeg and cinnamon in a large bowl until smooth. Divide mixture in 6-oz for eight ramekins or custard cups.
Place cups in shallow metal pan and pour boiling water to come half way upside cups. Bake for 35 minutes in 350F (180C) oven until edges are set and centre still jiggles. Remove from water and refrigerate until cold. About 2 hours. If made ahead of time cover and refrigerate for 2 days.
Topping:
Sprinkle with sugar, broil 6 inches (15cm) from heat or burn with pastry torch until melted and caramelized. About 2 minutes. Serves 8

"AUGUST DIVASCOPES"
